St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy Taking Patients
Academy of Medicine Encourages Physicians to Donate Samples

Every day in Cincinnati, there are people who cannot afford desperately needed medicine. Imagine going without heat in order to buy Insulin, or watching a loved one suffer without relief. The St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy is the only pharmacy in southeast Ohio dedicated to providing completely free medication and professional pharmaceutical care to people in need from Hamilton, Butler, Warren an d Clermont counties. Three years in the making, the SVDP Charitable Pharmacy opened in September 2006 and is currently open Mondays and Thursdays.

Those helped by the SVDP Charitable Pharmacy include homeless persons, those who have lost their jobs and the working poor who cannot afford prescription insurance or pharmacy co-pays. Others need temporary assistance as they try to secure coverage, qualify for other assistance programs or reach a gap in Medicare coverage. Reaching a wide cross-section of those who are uninsured or underinsured, most referrals come from local clinics, private physicians, transitional housing, homeless shelters and hospital emergency rooms.

In partnership with the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati, the Charitable Pharmacy is now accepting donations of sample medication from physician offices. For more information, contact Mike Espel, R. Ph. at (513) 562-8841, ext. 264.

Working with a variety of partners & supporters, the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy Board, a dynamic group of community leaders from Leadership Cincinnati and elsewhere, takes an innovative approach to meeting one of our community's most pressing needs.

St. Vincent de Paul's Charitable Pharmacy received a $10,000 donation from The Kroger Co. as a result of commissions that the Corryville Kroger received from a winning lottery ticket in April. The gift was presented to SVDP on Friday, July 28, 2006.
